SPECIAL FEATURES


ACADEMIC CELL

The Academic Cell is a body constituted by the Governing Council to promote:

  1. Aptitude for research among faculty and students.

  2. Publication of research papers and creative works.

  3. Extension activities related to community development.

  4. Design and introduction of new courses taking into account the contextual and contemporary needs.

  5. Inter-faith, inter-dialogue with the intention to foster Secularism, Democracy and Spirituality.

INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL (IQAC)

IQAC works in the College for realizing the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of the institution.

 

CAREER GUIDANCE CELL

The College has a Career Guidance Cell that caters to the information needs of the students relating to various courses and career opportunities. The main functions of the cell are the following.

1. To involve teachers and students-volunteers in organizing Career Guidance Programmes.

2. To organize Seminars, Coaching Classes for competitive examinations, skill training Programmes, campus interviews etc. for the
students

3. To provide a reference collection of career books

Every year Career Orientation Seminars are organized by the Cell. Practical training in group discussion, model interview etc are also conducted. Eminent personalities from different walks of life are invited for lectures. A “Career Corner” is set apart in the College Library specially for the guidance of students/alumni who are preparing for competitive examinations. A good Reference Collection consisting of encyclopedias, handbooks etc. are made available in the Career Corner. About 15 Career Journals are also subscribed to for the benefit of job hunters and interested students.


CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE ON STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Consultative Committee is unique in several respects. This is a body constituted by the Staff Council with the purpose of maintaining and on-going interaction with the students on all matters of the campus life. The representatives of student political parties and recognized organizations like SCM, NSS, Brains Trust, Women’s Cell, Bestarts etc. are members. The Convener of the Discipline Committee and the Staff Advisor to the Student Union are ex-officio members. In addition, four or five faculty members are nominated by the Staff Council to the Consultative Committee. Principal is the Chairperson and the Staff Advisor serves as the Convener of the Committee.

The Committee meets at least twice in each term. The meetings are also convened as and when it is deemed necessary to discuss matters of common interest in curricular and co-curricular fields. This serves as a forum where students are free to raise grievances and difficulties faced on the campus. Various aspects related to developmental and infra-structural needs are also discussed. It is noteworthy that a general code of conduct for the smooth functioning of the College Union is evolved in this forum.


THE TUTORIAL SYSTEM

The college has a Tutorial System whereby the students are divided into small groups (15-20) each under a teacher. One regular hour per week is assigned in the general time-table for the Tutorial class. The tutors are free to engage more tutorial classes outside the regular working hours. The system serves the following functions:

1) Good inter personal relationship between teachers and students

2) Value education

3) Free expression of views related to current events and ideologies

4) Personality development

5) Sharing the problems of students with their tutors

The teachers guide and advise the students on matters pertaining to their studies and personal problems and also act as guardians of students on the campus. It is expected that the students as well as their parents keep in touch with the concerned teacher.


REMEDIAL EDUCATION

Remedial education is provided by teachers to students who need extra help to improve the level of learning. Special coaching and re-exams are arranged for students whose performances is not up to the mark. One teacher in each departments co-ordinates the programmes.


UGC / JRF CELL

The UGC / JRF Cell aims at imparting training for students to appear for the UGC/JRF test, held twice a year, which will enable them to take up teaching assignments and research projects. The Cell conducts classes for general paper and provides necessary orientation to prepare for subject papers.


EXTENSION & CONSULTANCY

The College undertakes extension and consultancy services as a part of its commitment to the society. Community development programmes like Medical Camps, Literacy Mission, Blood Donation, Environmental Awareness, Village Adoption, Communication Proficiency, Career Orientation, Tailoring & Handicraft Training, Setting up Language & Science Laboratories, Updating of Library services, Football Academy, Refresher Courses for School & College Teachers, Mushroom Cultivation, Surveys etc. are some of the activities in this domain. A Community Extension Cell functions in the college coordinating these activities.


COMMUNITY EXTENSION CELL

The Cell offers various programmes and aimed at the uplift of the community around. The Cell conducts a nursery school attached to the Women’s Hostel, offers pre-school education to the poor children of the locality. Tailoring classes are also organized for the poor young women of the locality in the hall adjacent to the nursery. The Cell has also adopted a village. Various programmes have been chalked out for its all round development. Students also visit orphanages and poor homes, and offer assistance to the needy and the destitute. Under the auspices of the Cell, remedial teaching is also conducted for the less privileged children of the society.


MAR THOMA COLLEGE COUNSELING CENTRE

The Centre started in 2001, functions very effectively and guides the students to cope with various problems faced by them. Two trained counselors are presently in charge of the Centre


PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

The college has a well organized Parent-Teacher Association with a constitution of its own. The PTA usually meets twice a year. In addition to general P.T.A, the class P.T.As also function effectively. The college gets much of its financial support through contribution raised by the Association from time to time.


ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The college has a strong Alumni Association with chapter in different parts of the world. They contribute liberally to the development projects of the college. The college keep in touch with the Alumni through regular publication of the Alumni News. Various Chapters also have their own news bulletins.


MAR THOMA COLLEGE CHRISTIAN UNION

Mar Thoma College Christian Union is open to all Christian Students and members of the staff of the college. It seeks to co-operate with all the Christian activities in the college. It is affiliated to the Student Christian Movement of India. It is hoped that the union functioning as a part of the world-wide Student Christian Movement, will enable its members to have a wider vision, to grow in the spirit of Christian Unity and to have an all-round development in Christian life. Morning worship, Church related Service Programmes, Camps etc. are some of the activities conducted by the SCM in the college.
